What are some tips for using an ATM in foreign countries?
  • Check the network: You can use your Bank of America debit card or ATM card anywhere you see the CIRRUS symbol. In addition to CIRRUS, you can use ATMs with the MasterCard or Visa symbols. The symbol on the front of your card will indicate if your card is MasterCard or Visa.
    • To find the nearest MasterCard/CIRRUS ATM, please visit https://www.mastercard.com/atm
    • To Find the nearest Visa ATM, please visit https://www.visa.com/atmlocator/index.jsp
  • Understand the types of fees charged: The non-Bank of America ATM usage fee is $5. This fee is assessed for each withdrawal, transfer or balance inquiry performed at a non-Bank of America ATM in a foreign country. In addition, the ATM operator may charge an access fee for cash withdrawals. Your deposit account statement will reflect the U.S. dollar equivalent of your foreign ATM withdrawal. Bank of America will assess an international transaction fee of 3% of the U.S. dollar amount for all ATM withdrawals processed in foreign currency. International ATM operators may offer to do your currency conversion for you, but they may charge a higher fee for conversion. To insure that your currency conversion does not incur a fee higher than the one stated above, you may refuse the ATM operator's offer to convert the amount of the transaction. The fee is assessed as a separate transaction fee on the posting date of the withdrawal.

You can avoid the non-Bank of America ATM usage fee and ATM operator access fee by using one of our international partner ATMs in the corresponding countries listed below:

Note: Participation in this program is subject to change, please review participating Financial Institutions prior to travelling internationally and using International Partner ATMs.
  • Check your PIN: Most international ATM operators support up to 12-digit PINs. However, some operators only support 4-digit PINs. Also, be sure your PIN does not start with a zero. To change your PIN, insert your ATM or debit card in to a Bank of America ATM, enter their current PIN, select More Options, select Change PIN and follow the screen prompts. Be sure to know your PIN by numbers, as some ATMs outside the United States don't have letters on the keyboards.
  • International ATM operators: Some international ATM operators have limited functionality and may not offer access to your savings account or offer transfers and inquiries. All ATM operators will provide withdrawal access to your primary checking account. Some international ATMs are only available during normal business hours. Some (but not all) international ATMs offer instruction in English.
  • Have a backup plan: While traveling overseas, systems used by international banks occasionally may go down, so there may be a possibility you will not be able to use your card when you need to use an ATM or make a purchase. In addition to using your debit card or ATM card, you should consider taking foreign currency. Please visit the foreign currency area of our website to explore these options.

What is a chip card?

A chip card is a standard-size plastic debit card that contains an embedded microchip as well as the traditional magnetic stripe. The chip encrypts information to help increase data security when making transactions at terminals or ATMs that are chip enabled. More about chip cards

Will my chip debit card work at all ATMs?

Yes, your card will work at both a chip-enabled ATMs and at ATMs where only magnetic stripe transactions are accepted.

  1. Insert your card face-up in the ATM to begin your transaction.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Chip-enabled ATMs will hold your card during the transaction.
  3. Always remember to take your card when prompted.
Do transactions work the same for chip-enabled ATMs and ATMs where only magnetic stripe transactions are accepted?

No, there may be differences. Once you insert your card, the easy on-screen instructions will guide you through the transaction process.

  • Chip-enabled ATMs: Insert your card (you may be prompted to remove and reinsert your card). The ATM will hold your card during the transaction. Simply follow the on-screen instructions to complete your transaction and remember to take your card when your transaction is complete. If you need to conduct more than one transaction, you will need to reinsert your card and enter your PIN again as a security measure.
  • Non-chip-enabled ATMs: A chip card still has a magnetic stripe on the back, so if the ATM is not yet chip-enabled, your transaction will be processed as it is today.
What are some safety tips for using an ATM card or debit card?
  • Treat your card like cash and keep it in a safe place
  • Keep your personal identification number (PIN) a secret
